Miss Guenevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand), a middle-aged governess is unfairly dismissed from her job in an agency. With only so much as severance she decides to seize the opportunity of intercepting an employment assignment which involves actress/ singer Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams). Miss Pettigrew finds herself caught up in high society struggles and with Ms. Lafosse's love triangle. On the other hand Miss Pettigrew also finds herself in an awkward position as she is also attracted to Joe, but Joe's boss, senses something off with Miss Pettigrew.
