The pentagon setup a project called the "Human Hibernation Project" which is designed to preserve the best and most talented pilots the military has. But as a test they Bauers (Luke Wilson), the most under-achieving and most average pilot. They also pick Rita, a prostitute who agreed to be a test subject in exchange for her criminal charges to be dropped. The project which was scheduled to run for only a year is abandoned because the officer in charge to head it was caught up in a scandal. So Bauers and Rita was forgotten for the longest time until the wake up in the year 2505.
