At first glance Hancock (Will Smith) is nothing but a drunkard bum with no purpose in life, but what he has are super powers which he uses to save people's lives, but in a most undesirable way where he brings about his being a bum to being a "superhero". One day Hancock saves a PR executive named Rey from a train accident. Rey then gets an ingenious idea to reinvent Hancock's image so that people would love him. But something weird transpires when Hancock meets Rey's family and he discovers more than what he bargained for.
